Kent Nagano, conductor

Kent Nagano has established a reputation as a gifted interpreter of both the operatic and symphonic repertoire. Equally at home in classical and contemporary repertoire, much of his inspiration stemmed from the time he spent with his mentor, Olivier Messiaen, whose piano he inherited. He has played a significant part in the new wave of thinking in Germany, where musical minds have been opening up significantly to inventive, controversial programming and musical thought.

Kent Nagano is Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Bayerische Staatsoper.

New Release: Brahms Symphony No 4 & Schönberg Variations with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin

'Nagano gives an absolutely superb reading of the Schönberg, the melodic lines shaped with affection, the complex textures perfectly and fastidiously balanced, but with a thrilling sense of through-composed drive and purpose as strong as in the Brahms. There's a gratifying number of good competing versions but this probably knocks even Karajan's classic recording with the Berlin Philharmonic, my favourite until now, off the top spot.'
